Preseason Pregaming: Spurs at Rockets

TOYOTA CENTER — The Spurs and Rockets tip off at 1 central time on NBA TV. It’s a very early tip and that, coupled with general preseason rust, is not giving me hope for a visually-appealing game.

  • Kawhi Leonard was working on the lovable Eurostep move at the end of his pregame workout. Leonard has been working to expand his game, especially attacking the paint off the dribble. Making the Eurostep a natural part of his game makes him that much more dangerous. I wouldn’t expect to see it implemented immediately, but it’s something to watch out for, especially when he’s got the ball in transition.
  • Tiago Splitter spent some time working on moving off the ball when a teammate has the ball in the post. Splitter was making cuts baseline and towards the middle from the opposite block, trying to create passing lanes when the other big man makes a move.
  • Manu Ginobili should play today, and there’s a good chance he plays solid minutes. Manu missed the last two games and is probably in need of some game action, for condition if nothing else.
  • I’m curious to see what kind of rotations we can expect today. I watched most of shootaround and the Spurs seemed to go through their regular season rotation. As I was headed back to the media room to post this, Eddy Curry and Josh Powell came out to get their work in and I hadn’t seen any of the other training camp hopefuls appear, though I assume they got their warm ups in at the beginning of shootaround.

It’s interesting that Kawhi is being groomed more as a swingman than a combo forward. I like it.
