Rumor: 3-Point Shootout About To Get Spicy
New Orleans is a city known for having some flavor, but it appears things are going to get a little spicy for All-Star weekend. According to Eric Pincus of Basketball Insiders, Marco Belinelli will be one of the six invites to participate in the Foot Locker 3-Point Shootout on All-Star Saturday Night.
The pool for the three-point shootout has yet to be named but the early list, subject to change, includes Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors), Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves) and Marco Belinelli (San Antonio Spurs) representing the West.
Pincus goes on to write defending champ Kyrie Irving and Atlanta Hawks forward Kyle Korver will be invited to represent the Eastern Conference and they’re trying to hash out the final participant.
The Spurs get little love nationalzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Sorry, I fell asleep from the boredom that narrative brings. Anyways, Belinelli leads the league in 3-point shooting and has been hovering around or above 50 percent all season long. He’s a no-brainer for this. Check out his short chart on the season (click to enlarge):
What we’re looking at is near 50 percent or higher in three of the five areas in the shootout. He’s at 45 percent in another area and 38 in the last one. So playing the averages you could assume he’s going to make 12-14 baskets and that doesn’t include the money balls. What I’m saying is, he’s a good shooter from all over the court, which will bode well in a contest like this.
As you may remember, Matt Bonner participated in last year’s shootout and damn near won before Irving went bananas. You figure Belinelli stands as good a chance at the Red Mamba. My only hope if that if he wins, he gives a spicy meat balls celebration.
