We are back with our latest - and hopefully improved - San Antonio Spurs audio show, the 48MoH Podcast. In this installment, Graydon and I talk about the end of the Spurs season (obviously), the latest on Tiago Splitter and his good looks, the Tony Parker trade rumors and the NBA’s Most Improved Player award.

    I enjoyed your discussion, Andrew & Graydon. It’s nice to hear your verbal views on the state of the Spurs from time to time. That said, I would have liked to hear both of your opinions in response to some more “detailed” questioning about certain issues, particularly concerning “how close to title contenders” the Spurs are at present, and the “pros & cons” of seriously looking into a trade of either Tony or Manu.

    For example, Graydon was asked about the Spurs “needs”, and listed off, perimeter defender, interior defensive player, and more three point shooting, but then suggests that we can become title contenders with Splitter (which is far from guaranteed that we even get him), and some other unidentified “tweaks”.

    It would be nice to hear some more detailed questioning on this issue. Below are just some examples:

    With our cap situation, how are we going to adequately fill all the needs that you mentioned without trading one of our most valuable assets (TP or Manu)?

    Give me some examples of some FA’s that are available in which we could afford?

    Give me some examples of some “tweaks” that could catapult us into title contention?

    Don’t we need to get at least 2-3 more quality young/in prime type of players in the top 8-9 in the rotation?

    Why, or why not?

    Should we be starting to make some moves that indicates a preparation for Duncan’s continual decline and eventual retirement?

    These are just a sampling of questions that it would be nice to hear each of you address.

    As a suggestion, perhaps you could do another podcast in the near future that incorporates questions from your readers. You could set the topic(s) area(s) in a post, and ask for reader questions on the topic with the intent to answer a portion of them in your upcoming podcast.

    TRADE SUGGESTION:

    What about a trade for RJ to Gilbert Arenas? we would have a good 2 guard starting lineup??? we can use Manu and George off the bench?!

    PG - TP/GH
    SG - GA/MG
    SF - MH/MG/GT
    PF - TD/DB
    C - TS/AM

    Imagine a starting lineup of TP, GA, MH, TD, TS

    Think about it we have 2 attacking guards at the start. If Parker plays the penetrator we have Arenas waiting for a kick out and vice versa. we would put the opposing team on defense more than offense. (Arenas can shoot the 3 better than RJ).We would be disrupting their rhythm and we would have a deep bench of GH, MG, AM, DB???
    I think this will give us 3 Championship(3peat like the Lakers!!!).

    All we have to do is bring Splitter, draft or sign a “big man” free agent add another wing and probably Curtis Jerrels/Alonzo Gee?! VIOLA!

    Does anyone know if Richard Jefferson were to opt out, would the Spurs lose the ability to use the MLE due to being slightly under the salary cap?

    You can only use the MLE whe a team is over the salary cap… if RJ opts out we would go under the salary cap.

    If RJ opts out and we renounce him and the other free agents (Mason, Bonner, Bogans, etc.) we’d be around 54m vs. an expected cap of 56-57. You don’t “lose” your MLE when under the cap, though, you simply can’t use both your cap space and the MLE.

    Yeah, we can be under the cap by a couple million, and only have six players in uniform. The whole conversation is pretty much moot as it relates to the Spurs use of the MLE this year.

    @Jim Henderson, how is the whole conversation moot? Maybe if you don’t know the answer to the question being asked then just don’t speak on the topic.

    Guys great podcast, it was a little hard to hear in the gym due to audio only being in one ear at a time, don’t know if this is something that can be tweaked or not.

    We know what MLE Target #1 is, Tiago Splitter, but what about option #2? Obviously the Spurs biggest need after interior D is a knockdown 3 point shooter. I wonder if the Spurs don’t get a firm commitment from Splitter by draft night if they’ll draft a PF/C and then throw the MLE at Mike Miller or JJ Reddick. Mike Miller would be my preference but what does everyone else think, excluding Jim Henderson, a good #2 target would be in the event we don’t land Splitter?

    If we do land Splitter, I would guess the Spurs would target a perimeter player in the draft and then use the LLE on a player like Rasual Butler or Anthony Morrow, I’m just not sure the LLE would be enough to land either player.

    Thoughts???

    It is MOOT because, number one, RJ IS NOT GOING TO OPT OUT, and number two, even in the unlikely case that he does, it would obviously NOT effect the MLE because you can’t “really” be considered “under the cap” with SIX players in uniform.

    It’s very unlikely that we can afford Miller with the MLE. Reddick, on the other hand, would be an interesting possibility if Orlando just can’t afford him, and we aren’t outbid by another team. I’m not sure what Reddick’s FA value is, but the full MLE might be pretty close.

    You’re right, it’s very unlikely that we could get Morrow or Butler with the LLE (particularly Morrow).

    Morrow should get a fairly juicy offer, he’d be a good fit wherever LeBron ends up and ought to be well paid. That said, I still wonder if Golden State would be willing to trade draft picks if they see a player they like later in the draft and pick up a nice role-playing big man via trade… if so, can they match Morrow’s offer sheet with the intention to sign and trade him? That’s legal, right? Unfortunately, it’s just as likely they throw money at him and keep him, despite having Curry, if they are in love with the 3 ball.
