San Antonio Spurs waive Alonzo Gee
Just a few days after getting his first extended public look as a member of the San Antonio Spurs-during extended garbage time in a 116-93 victory over the 76ers-the team announced today they have waived Alonzo Gee.
That Saturday represented the first extended look at Gee, as opposed to preseason when such hopeful prospects often get such time, should make the news far from a surprise.
While Austin might still be in the cards, it was apparent Gee is not ready to be a viable rotation-or even end of bench-player.
Having kept track of Gee the entire fourth quarter, he appeared to be a good, though not exceptional athlete (maybe just as raw as James White, just not as explosive). Looking back through some game notes, “out of control” seemed to be the word most associated with his drives.
Plus, it’s never good news when your must improve needs reads like a checklist for Spurs wing players.
With Gee gone and James Anderson injured, the Spurs now have no true backup for Richard Jefferson at the small forward position.
The Spurs have two weeks to add a player to the roster. Their roster currently stands at 12; League rules require a minimum of 13.
