Spurs hand Bobby Simmons the pink slip, bring in another point guard
Today’s announcement from the San Antonio Spurs is a curious one. Not the part about Bobby Simmons getting waived — that didn’t surprise me much — but that the Spurs signed point guard Chris Quinn. To the press release:
The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have signed point guard Chris Quinn. Per team policy, terms of the deal are not disclosed. At the same time, the Spurs announced that Bobby Simmons has been placed on waivers.
Quinn (#11, 6’2â€, 175, 9/27/83) has appeared in 193 regular season games in his four-year NBA career, averaging 5.2 points, 2.1 assists and 1.2 rebounds in 15.2 minutes per game, while shooting .390 (150-385) from three-point range. He enjoyed his best campaign during the 2007-08 season, averaging 7.8 points, 3.0 assists and 2.0 rebounds per game in 22.3 minutes of play, including 25 starts for the Heat.
Bobby Simmons only played in two games so far this season and James Anderson was Pop’s clear favorite to come in the game for Richard Jefferson. Waiving him wasn’t surprising, although it is a good thumbs-up for Anderson’s play so far this season.
But bringing in Chris Quinn? That’s a little out of left field. However, I can see a few of reasons for the Spurs to sign Quinn.
One reason, and this is one that everybody should hope isn’t true, is that maybe George Hill’s injury is a little worse than everyone thinks. Or the Spurs may just think that Quinn’s skill-set really fits the team off the bench.
Another answer is that maybe the Spurs think Garrett Temple isn’t ready yet, and the front office wants to send him to Austin for more development. Chris Quinn is just insurance in case Parker or Hill have to miss a game here or there.
Another possibility is that there is a deal brewing and maybe Quinn’s contract is just some money to throw into a trade. I doubt it, though.
The final scenario? The Spurs just wanted to get in on some of this awesomeness.
