Pregaming: Spurs vs. Nets
AT&T CENTER — It’s New Year’s Eve, but that doesn’t change the fact that there’s a basketball game to be played. The Spurs hosted the new Brooklyn Nets for the first time in an early start on Monday night, tipping off at 6 PM central time.
- Gary Neal will not play agains the Nets. Neal will miss his third straight game with a strained right calf muscle.
- When one of the Nets beat writers told Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich that PJ Carlesimo suggested Pop rest some of his starters against Brooklyn, Pop simply responded, “It’s too expensive.”
- There was an interesting note in the pregame media packet, courtesy of the Spurs’ PR folks. The Spurs’ trio of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili have won the fifth-most games in NBA history as a unit. Those three have won 444 games together as members of the Spurs. The Celtics’ group of Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish won the most games together with 540, followed by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Cooper and Magic Johnson’s Los Angeles Lakers, and a couple of Celtics lineups featuring Bill Russell and Sam Jones.
