Spurs second half makeover continues with win over Suns

by

There was a first quarter run that made Spurs fans sweat a little bit, but Sunday’s 107-91 win over the Suns showed two things. The first is that the Spurs aren’t letting games slip away anymore. The second is that Tim Duncan is coming for your soul.

One of the story lines of the Spurs season up until really the last month was that the team had a tendency to blow games they should win. Probably the two most memorable came in mid-March when they had a win against the Cleveland Cavalier in their grasp, but the combo of missed free throws and Kyrie Irving turning into the Human Torch caused an overtime loss that was as hilarious as it was disappointing. Two games later they dropped a giant stinker against the New York Knicks when they were up 10 at the half and managed to lose in overtime. They had been playing pretty well at that point, but the fact remained that they were still having trouble hanging on to leads. While the Spurs appeared to be playing well at the time, that loss to New York appeared to be rock bottom for the team, the wake up call they needed. Since then, aside from a bizarre game in Dallas, they Spurs have gained big leads and held on to them. They’re 14-1 since that Knicks loss with 13 of those coming by double digits. That third quarter swoon that had been going on? Not so much since that Knicks game. Before that loss the Spurs were nearly a point worse than their opponents in the third quarter (-0.7 points). In their last 15 games, they’re a +3.0 in the third quarter. Most of their destruction comes in the first half and the second half is about sustaining those leads, which they’ve been doing in the last month.

Tim Duncan is a wizard. After a very pedestrian March where one could argue the long season and the previous playoff runs were taking their toll on Duncan. Turns out he just wasn’t needed to be All-Star level Duncan. The last two games, with the two seed in their sights, Duncan’s been possessed, averaging 25.5 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 2.5 blocks per game. It’s just two games, but there was a sense of urgency in Duncan’s play that shows his ability to turn it up when the occasion calls for it. Kawhi Leonard will be the key in playoffs as has been in the regular season. But Tim Duncan has turned it up a notch in the playoffs each of the last three seasons. Looks like he’s showing again his offseason regimen and minutes watching during the season is paying off.

The Spurs travel to New Orleans on Wednesday. Matthew Tynan explains the tie-break situation here, but there’s still a lot to play out. The Warriors can do the Spurs a solid Monday night by taking down the Grizzlies. The Rockets are at Charlotte Monday night for the second night of a back-to-back before they close out the season against a very much improved Utah Jazz. The Los Angeles Clippers’ cake walk of a end of season schedule concludes with games against the Denver Nuggets and Phoenix Suns. Amazing that so much still needs to be decided with three days left in the regular season. Buckle up!

Grizzlies made into bedroom rug at GS…No Conley and no Allen. Game almost over and it was ugly.

The more exciting development is Wilson Chandler going off on the clippers. 5 min left and Denver up by 6. Warriors/Clippers in the conf Semi’s would be unbelievable since none of the starting stars for either side have made it past that round except reddick (no, torx a screw and Baby Davis on the bench don’t count. Cocky Warriors vs VERY angry Clips. Barnes isnt afraid to dance on the ejection line for a statement foul. What a blood bath that would be. There is also excitement if houston sits in the 5 seed as well. The lilliard Harden rematch…then the likely Harden vs Curry semi’s….Good story lines everywhere. Back to the Denver/Clips game to watch the Clips starters pull out of the hole the subs left them.

annnnnnd they do. From 5:30 to 2:30 lLeft the clippers score 10 and denver hits 1 free throw. Clips up by 4 at home with CP3 2:30 left….game over. Really. The clippers bench is horrendous.

It completely upsets me that the league rescinded the tech on Westbrook. Nobody says WHY they rescinded, just that it’s reviewable by the league and they rescinded. Yes Westbrook has played insane to get his team there and he deserves plenty of credit. NOBODY was surprised that they did rescind it. I just wanted to hear the load of crap come out of the commissioners office as to why. It’s one thing when someone doctors a situation while everyone looks the other way. It’s another when they have to come up with a plausible explanation. Apparently it’s OKAY to tell a ref F U as long as you are immediately repentant and your team mates (current MVP) and coach backhandedly call for the league office to look the other way….for his 17th offense and second repeal. Not one person said what Westbrook did to deserve OR not do to repeal. I suddenly feel like ESPN is on a VERY tight leash leading into the commissioners office. How’s this story.

“Westbrook sends obscenity towards official and gets Tech. League office says it was OK.” Everyone did a great job of burying that one. If that is NOT the case then why not say so. “Westbrook got a tech for a simple gesture that the league office found to be incidental and far below normal technical standards”. Simple enough, easy to understand, highly believable. Todays ESPN headline reads. “Ramona Shelburne Explains why the league rescinded Westbrooks Technical” the ensuing video of Shelburne says NOTHING to do about WHY. A simple explanation that they CAN rescind and have done so before with Westbrook and then an “I’m not surprised” with a further garbled explanation of OKC’s and NEW ORLEANS schedule with some hype. Not one word of why they rescinded or why she’s not surprised. Possible discontinuity between the person writing the headline for the video clip. I was looking for a factual insight and we got a reading of the remaining schedule with some hype. I doubt it was Ramona’s fault or she was deliberately hiding something but didn’t ANYONE ELSE want to know WHY it was rescinded. I’m sure everyone in the N O organization wanted to know. Kinda important to NO fans and SPURS FANS. In fairness to Anthony Davis the league announced today that he will only be ejected on his THIRD Technical tomorrow night. That is all.
