Spurs sign Garrett Temple

The Spurs have put out a press release to announce the signing of Garrett Temple to a 10-day contract.

The 6-6, 190-pound Temple has seen time this season with the Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings and the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the D-League.  Signed as an undrafted free agent by Houston on 9/22, he averaged 2.5 points and 0.3 assists in four preseason games with the Rockets before being waived on 10/21.  Temple was allocated to Rio Grande Valley on 11/4 and averaged 14.9 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 30 games with the Vipers.  He signed his first of two 10-day contracts with Houston on 2/8.  In nine games with the Rockets he averaged 5.0 points and 1.6 rebounds in 13.1 minutes.  On 3/3 Temple signed a 10-day contract with Sacramento.  He averaged 2.2 points and 0.6 rebounds in 4.6 minutes with the Kings.

This is a little surprising, but happy news nonetheless. The surprise comes from San Antonio’s lack of playing time for a player such as Temple (although, these signings create opportunity for locker room and practice court evaluation, more than anything), and from the fact that Cedric Jackson had the appearance of 2010-11 training camp invitee in his limited minutes against the T-Wolves.

The happy part of this is to see that the front office is proactive in finding players for next season’s roster, and their mining for diamonds in the rough is to be applauded.

    i agree espn but what is about dewayne jones to be hated?is it that the offense sceme only requires 1 post player with 4 shooters?instead of a big rebounding dunking garbageman accompanied with the post player?like all teams have done since the creation of basketball?

    I think Spurs are targeting guards and forwards because they feel they need to see more from these guys and they also aren’t with the Toros. With Jones, they know what the guy can do in their Spurs Lite system. I think that’s why Jones doesn’t get the chance with the Spurs. That’s at least my theory.

    This is a good move just like with Jackson. Both of these guys play D and are athletic. Next season has the potential to be exciting. It’s forced on the FO as well since they don’t have a lot of cash to work with.

Able to stay in front of his man laterally, his length enables him to block a substantial number of shots for a player playing the guard position.     Dwayne Jones has already had multiple opportunities with other NBA teams and hasn’t stuck; there’s no reason to believe he would be any different with us, so why not bring in a new guy? The realistic truth is that nobody in the D League should be getting any minutes for us at this point in the season, and there’s enough info out there at this point for us to have an idea of what Jones could be for us, so this call up is probably to have some insurance in case Hill has an injury and to have a look at him for next year’s training camp.

    Nice win by the Spurs last night; obviously we should have gotten the win, but seeing us dominate for 48 minutes is always encouraging. Now we get to the teeth of our schedule. If we can go 4-3 in our remaining games against Cleveland, the Lakers, Orlando, Denver, and Dallas, I would be ecstatic. Tough games still to come against Boston, Atlanta, OKC and Phoenix, too, and I feel like we’ve really got to go 3-1 or 4-0 in those games to restore any confidence that we might be able to hang with the other contenders come playoff time.

    The interesting thing is, how high do we want to climb? 5th (or even maybe 4th) seed means we probably get Utah, a team that swept us this year, and then the Lakers in the 2nd round. Dallas and Denver look like no picnic, but I’d rather take my chances with them and give us a little more time to work Tony back into the rotation before we (hopefully) get to play the Lakers. The honest truth is that we probably still have a hard time making it out of the first round at all, but assuming our goal is to still win a title at this point, it looks like the 6-7 seeds is where we want to be.

    I love the Spurs and have for several years now. This year has been somewhat of a puzzle.

    I think we desperately need some athletic talent in the frontcourt. I am talking length (for rim protection), speed and the ability to score at least 10 per game. Guards from opposing teams are getting to the rim with a lot of ease.

    If you look at the Spurs defense in years gone by, they are still only giving up about 3-4 points more per game this year. However, they seem to lack the ability to “lock you down” in key stretches of a game–particularly against quality teams.

    I think they need to bring Manu back and I would be open to trading Tony Parker and allow George Hill to continue his development. They guy has length and can defend and is becoming a much improved offensive player. Parker is a liability at the defensive end.

    Little known fact, Garretts dad, Collis Temple, who was the first african american to play at LSU, played one year of pro ball, with the San Antonio Spurs while they were in the ABA.

    Before the signing of C. Jackson and G. Temple, the Spurs only had 12 guys on the extended 15-man roster. Ratliff was traded to the Bobcats for a 2nd round pick in 2016 (ouch) and Finley and Haislip were released after each player requested it.

    At this stage, teams have to guarantee contracts until the end of the season if they are signed for more than 10 days, hence Jackson got a 10-day contract.

    If the Spurs moved Dwayne Jones onto the 15-man roster, they would have to guarantee his contract, and if they found a better player, with no roster slot and wanted to release Jones, they’d still have to pay him. Clearly their strategy was to clear out their 3 roster extensions and then see which players they want to offer them to, guaranteed contract included.

    The Spurs were looking for a backup PG and backup SF before the trade deadline. Nothing worked out, so they now are seeing what is the best they can do at these positions from the NBDL.
