Spurs sign Garrett Temple for rest of season
The San Antonio Spurs announced on Tuesday evening that they signed Garrett Temple to a contract for the remainder of this season. He had previously signed a 10-day contract with the Spurs.
The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have signed guard Garrett Temple. Per team policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.
San Antonio is Temple’s third NBA team this season. He also saw time with the Houston Rockets and Sacramento Kings. In two games with the Spurs, Temple has averaged 5.5 points in 17.0 minutes. On the season he has appeared in 16 games and is averaging 4.2 points and 1.1 rebounds in 10.9 minutes. He was originally signed to a 10-day contract by San Antonio on 3/13.
This is interesting for two reasons. The first is that the Spurs apparently saw enough in Temple’s short time with the team to sign him to another contract. The second point of interest is that the Spurs skipped signing Temple to a second 10-day contract and instead locked him up for the rest of the season.
There could be numerous reasons for this, but with Gregg Popovich’s own admission that any one signed at this point “isn’t going to help us this season,” it seems like the front office thinks Temple could have some impact on next year’s Spurs basketball team.

I dont understand why we would sign another guard… Don’t we have 12 of those?
Maybe pop saw someone that he thinks could get time behind parker with George a steady 2 guard?
I dont know, I am done trying to figure out what goes on in his head. I am sure he has a plan.

Congrats to Temple.

@diehardspur -
The guy is 6’6 and can handle the ball. He’s always been known for his defense first. He can play multiple positions (1-3).
Also, Spurs are being smarter and trying out guys now to see who to bring into camp. I’m sure Cedric Jackson will be back.
You have to remember that Parker and Hill + Manu (possibly) are the only ball handlers on the team. RMJ is not likely back and he’s not really a good ball handler for a lot of minutes.

“There is very little not to like about Temple in terms of natural physical gifts. He has outstanding size for a guard coupled with an enormous wingspan. He also has fairly smooth (although not freakish) athleticism, although his frame and overall bulk leave a lot to be desired. ”
“Temple is a stud on the defensive end, however. His enormous wingspan and solid quickness allow him to get out in the passing lanes and create a ton of deflections. Able to stay in front of his man laterally, his length enables him to block a substantial number of shots for a player playing the guard position. Defensive potential is without a doubt one of the main selling points of Temple as a prospect.”

sounds like the spurs are trying to find inexpensive guards that can handle the ball so the bulk of the money spent this offseason can be devoted to Ginobili and a bigman. Stretch that dollar

I’ll be the first to cite Bogans and his mediocre performance as the team’s Bowen… Pop could be looking to Temple as a player who shines in a defense first - defer on offense - kind of role.

Is Parker on his way out?

The Spurs are evolving toward a new ideal in which every player is 2 meters tall. This gives 12 potential defenders to throw at Kobe. Temple, Hairston, Blair, Manu, RJ, Bogans are the linchpins. They’re looking into a special exemption for George based on arm length.

A lot of you guys already nailed it. In Temple I see a slight chance of another George Hill combined with a touch of Bowen. I just couldn’t pass up the chance to get the guy into a full off-season and training camp. Like I said before, no one we bring on now is going to make any difference in the playoffs, but you don’t get better by waiting until after the summer fishing trips to start refilling the hopper.

If you’re gonna start posting as Coach Pop, Ima start posting as BALLHOG!!!

Makes sense since he’s apparently known for his defense and can’t hit the broad side of a barn with a shot. This guy makes Bogans look like Ray Allen.

@Greyberger: Don’t get confused. That’s “Greg” Popovich, not “Gregg” Popovich posting. They are probably related, though.

Replacement to Bogan in a near future ?

I don’t mind having Bogans for a minimum paycheck, but he has no business to be starting games.

Although, I don’t want to break down the RJ & Manu chemistry that’s going on.

You guys are crazy, don’t you see the problem? Why would Pop say no one we get now can help the season? If they add anyone to the team now it should be a young big man who can help TD down low. Is this kid suppose to step in the NBA and help them beat everyone and win a championship? I dont think so. Mcdyess and Bonner dont stand a chance in the playoffs, and Pop already messed up Blair by limiting him(remember him scolding him for scoring too much). If Pop is reading this(or anyone who knows him)if you want to head toward a solution play Ian and Blair(back and forth) next to Duncan until they foul out. Its not too late to get them ready for the playoffs. Pop, I know you have alittle ego thing going on with Ian but even if your right, its all about winning a championship. You blew that series to the Mavericks a couple of yrs ago when you sat Nazr and Nesterovic for Bruce Bowen on Dirk. I know they was suckin it up but Dirk was going to get 30-40 anyway but a 6’6 dude at PF you lose alot of rebounds and therefore possessions. I am not even guaranteeing that Ian would be the solution. But who knows? Not us because the coach is closed minded. Poor TD is getting older and he should be able to relax alittle bit during games.
oh and Pop, call Richard Jefferson into your office and scream at him and demand he score 25 ppg every night in a secret pact(and threat to bench his But for the playoffs and forever).
