Spurs Waive Dwayne Jones

San Antonio has waived F/C Dwayne Jones. The roster now stands at 17. Given the depth we had on the frontline, Jones’ chances of making the team were slim at best. We here at 48 Minutes of Hell wish him well and hope that one day he finds a permanent home in the NBA.

  • No surprise here. Same is expected for Jerrells and probably Marcus Williams.

  • Based on the few preseason games and contract situtations Bogans, Hairston and Mahinmi should get 13, 14 and 15 respectively.

  • I agree Juan but I would probaly take Marcus Williams over Bogans just has more upside.

  • There’s an article on the Express-News website today wherein Pop suggests that the Spurs will not fill the 15th roster spot unless somebody is so impressive that they can’t possibly cut him. So, Williams and Hairston might still BOTH be cut, even though it would break a few hearts.

  • I read that article and in my opinion it would be a travesty to cut Hairston. He’s played much better than Haislip and at least as well or better than Bogans-again in my opinion.

  • I agree,
Hairston is has not provided eye popping numbers, but he played well in these preseason games particularly on the defensive end. I hope the Spurs don’t cut him.

In my opinion, he’s already earned the 15th spot.

  • Robby,

I agree in every respect but one. Relative to his minutes, Hairston has put up very good numbers. Eye-popping? Maybe, maybe not. But he cam fill up a box score.

  • There’s no way the Spurs run with just 13. If Pop wants to rest players (and with injuries), that makes it very difficult. Yes, they are in luxury tax, but 2M more in luxury tax isn’t going to make or break the bank, especially if it can alter the possibilities of a championship.

You also want to keep some youngins around since Manu/Mason/Bonner/Finley (likely retire) are free agents this upcoming summer.

As for Hairston, it’s hard to see him cut, especially since he’s improved on Pop’s favorite area, defense. And his offense improved too. He also rebounds and gets in the action, which is something that Spurs have lacked in the past.

  • Tim,

I didn’t say he has eye popping numbers, I even said even if he has not provided eye popping numbers he still deserves the 15th spot because of his hustle and defense.

And thanks for agreeing with me, actually I’m thorn between Williams and Hairston. But considering their performances, my vote goes to Malik. Just my thoughts… Cheers!

  • In my mind hairston is in, Williams is our toros designate, and bogans is a big question mark, but we’ll see what happens tonight

  • You know. I think I understand all the signings except one. Haislip. The Spurs signed him and brought him over from Europe, giving the impression that they were already sold on him. Then he does not play in the Summer League. Again, giving the impression that there is no decision to be made, they are sold on him. Now, we see him in the pre-season games and he has not been very impressive so far. In fact, if it was not for the fact that he has a contract, he looks like an obvious cut. So why did they commit to him?

Maybe someone at 48MoH can poke around for an answer.

    Someone at 48

  • Jason-I’ve seen other people share your sentiments that Hairston seems like the likely choice over Williams. But I believe he has maxed out his 2 years of D-League eligibility and couldn’t return to the Toros. I don’t know if he is cut if he can play for another D-league team however. That would be interesting, b/c in that case we could call him up if he isn’t signed by another team.

btw- I attribute my all-time high in Spurs fanaticism to this ridiculously awesome off-season, as well as my personal discovery of this great site and its writers and readers. Thanks guys, keep up the great work.

  • @LonghornMike

You are correct. Williams is done with D-League. Only Hairston can go back. However, if you send Hairston back, but don’t cut him he still counts as a roster spot. If you waive him, he doesn’t necessarily have to play for the Toros/other teams can go after him(even if he’s on the Toros).

  • [...] roster spot maybe left open Posted on October 14, 2009 by robbylim As of this writing, I read a news that Dwayne Jones was waived by the Spurs, that makes our roster count, down to 17. Two more cuts and we have our final roster, [...]
