Spurs Waive Marcus Haislip

According to a Spurs press release, Marcus Haislip has been released “to pursue opportunities outside of the NBA.”

It’s not clear whether Haislip accepted a reduced buyout from the Spurs in order to accept a more lucrative contract elsewhere, or, for that matter, if that contract is ready to be signed. But he obviously felt like more playing time awaited elsewhere.

This move brings the Spurs’ roster to 14. The roster space could be used in a variety of ways, including not at all. But theoretically San Antonio could call up a D-League player, sign a veteran that is bought out by his current club, or take back more players than they give up in a trade.

Haislip played sparingly, but with the return of Matt Bonner and the recent flash of productivity from Ian Mahinmi it’s difficult to imagine a scenario in which Hailsip would take on a bigger role with the Spurs. Come playoff time, the Spurs will already have too many bigs than a standard postseason rotation can accommodate.

In other words, be careful not to read anything more into this than what it is. Haislip wanted out; the Spurs obliged his preference.

  • wish we could have given haislip more of chance. the few minutes i did see haislip play, he had a pretty nice stroke. didn’t get to really see the athleticism though.

let’s hope mahinmi continues to develop and contribute soon regularly b/c i am starting to worry about mcdyess. he doesn’t have good hands and his trusty jumper isn’t falling with regularity.

  • Sad. A guy off the bench that shot .600 from the 3 pt line is released?

Why on earth wasn’t Haislip getting the 20 minutes a game Bonner gets when Bonner was injured? Why didn’t Pop play him when Bonner was injured? I’d leave too, if I were next in line for an opportunity at work and the boss says no. Pop you messed this one up.

He shot .600 from the 3 pt line. An Horry type player the Spurs have no use for. Amazing.

  • The word from Bruno on ST is that Haislip is going to sign at Panathinaikos in Greece, it’s apparently pretty much a done deal, the club’s deadline to add players being next Tuesday.

  • Can’t blame the guy for taking a more lucrative opportunity for his own financial future. He may also prefer being overseas. I wouldn’t read too much into his shooting percentage and its relation to his p/t. Making some open 3s in garbage time is not the same thing as being defended and taking shots in the pressure packed moments of a game.

I wish him well and anticipate what our FO will do with the roster spot, even if for the time being that answer is nothing.

  • We would like to thank the Spurs for releasing this excellent player so we can sign him at Panathinaikos. You can rest assured that with coach Obradovits, Marcous will return to top performances very soon again. I was watching this player when he was playing for Efes and for Malaga in the previous years and I couldn’t really understand what a ‘minimum 20/25 minutes nba player’ was doing in Europe. Anyhow, thank you again Mr.Popovits.

  • well not having a chance to showcase your skills in crunch time isn’t the players fault. It’s an insult to put people in at garbage time with out giving them a real shot to crack the rotation.

  • I have watched every single Spurs game this season, but no more. They have just lost me because I can’t take it anymore.

Already in the second half of the season and the issues still remain. Lazy, lazy defense, boring offense, bad, bad, bad players.

We get rid of Haislip, but we keep the old McDyess, the Bogans who can’t make a layup, st****d RJ (I cannot say any louder how much of a disappointment he has been, specially how much money and how long we are stuck with him)

You would think that Parker since being hurt and all could work on his jumpshot, but no… he’s too good for that. Where has Parker improved in the last couple of years - he keeps making horrible decisions and shooting like crap.

We are too small and weak. We have no bigs but Dyess and TD and Dyess SUCKSSSSSS.

I wanted the Spurs to lose tonight, they triedto come back halfway into the 4rth quarter, they need to learn they can’t do that. Play horrible and lazy and then try to turn it on. Ridiculous. Timmy’s 20000 point game goes down as a loss.

2 losses at home. One more loss and we are back down to the 9th seed. If we stay this course… we won’t even see the playoffs.

Where is Ratliff, why no RMJ.

My friends… The SPURS are no more.

  • http://www.sportando.net/eng/europa/euroleague/5405/haislip_close_to_signing_for_panathinaikos.html marcus haislip goes to euroleague team

  • Its confirmed that he has signed with the European Champions, Panathinaikos.

  • Too bad. He always looked good when they put him in. But what good is that when they Only put you in in garbage time.
Im glad he’ll get playing time somewhere else.

  • i really didn’t think marcus haislip was worth investing money in anyway. he didn’t have much of an upside considering he already failed once in the NBA and he is approaching 30. he was as good as he was going to be, which is not NBA caliber.

so mahnimi has shown some productivity, but i’m sure it won’t translate into playing time. i think the guy is still worth some burn either to improve our interior defense or boost his trade value. if ratliff is going to collect dust on the bench and dyess is going to continue to under-perform, throw blair and mahinmi out there to cause some youthful havok against the young bulls frontcourt.

if only ian could avoid hearing the whistle….
