I’m also surprised to not see Austin Nichols’ name there too. A shame. I was pretty high on the kid being a part of the team, even though he likely would’ve been sent to the Toros or showing off his business casual attire.

And wasn’t Nando “Calrissian” De Colo going to be stashed overseas for a bit?

I’m also excited to see De Colo’s name there, I believe he’s still going back over, but this will at least give us a better feel for his game

Yeah, I wonder. Maybe the Spurs will give him a guaranteed deal for this season. But if they do, someone has to go. Maybe that’s Williams. Maybe Hairston, Gist or McClinton don’t make the team. Maybe Finley is traded. I’m not sure. But I do know De Colo is under another contract and the Spurs have precious few roster spaces available.

With this squad, we’ve gotta win the summer league!

man.. i’m psyched that Nando is on the roster. i like his skills with the ball and his court vision. a “true point and playmaker” that this team does not really have. parker to an extent, but hes more of a scoring point imo.

of course, theres the defense side of things to take into account..

Six players from the summer league on the main roster…that seems really high, especially for a title contender. Then again, Hill was already on the Spurs, and depth is a real concern right now.

I know you said you were surprised to not see Williams on the roster… so does that mean his spot with the Spurs is guaranteed now? Does this mean he might not even be with the Spurs?

Also, lot of talk about the value of trading Bowen/Oberto/Thomas… does Mason Jr have any value? Not sure what his contract is or if there would be any takers…

His contract is only a partial guarantee, I’d guess. But his not being on the SL squad doesn’t mean anything one way or the other. We’ll probably see him in camp.

I’m sure Mason Jr has some value, but why would the Spurs move him and for whom? In a package with Finley and Bonner? Maybe. But that’s too big trades in one offseason. The more likely scenario is the Spurs figure out their MLE and roll with what they’ve got.

What about Bonner, Mason, plus a sign-and-trade with about 4mil from our MLE for Carlos Boozer?

Sounds like the Jazz were taken off gaurd by him and Okur opting in, I think that the Jazz want Milsap to be their PF of the future. Boozer fills an immediate need for the spurs but his contract still expires next year.

Why don’t the spurs target Boozer in a trade and turn up the heat on the Jazz by courting Milsap heavily with our MLE at the same time… this turns into a win-win for the spurs who either end up with Milsap or Boozer. Either way, I agree with the notion that its cheaper to find serviceable shooters like Mason in free agency than it is big men like Boozer or Milsap.

Othen then that, the Clippers are the only other potential partner for a big-man trade with the Spurs, with Camby being the goal in LA.

I don’t think the Jazz were taken off guard. I think they’d rather their players opt in so they can trade them and get something back, at least.

I think Camby and Boozer (especially Boozer) are long shots.

I understand why Boozer would be a long shot, but there is no doubt that they want to trade him… I think that the spurs should at the very least consider using Mason, Bonner, and Finley in a package for Camby or Lamar Odom in a sign and trade with the Lakers. Mason, Bonner and Finley make a combined salary of a just under 10 million, and that’s what Camby makes. The Clippers are also trying to move away one of their big men since the acquisition of Griffin, and they know that Camby is their most tradeable asset.

As far as Lamar Odom, the Lakers do want to sign him back, but I doubt that they could sign both him and Ariza, especially if we offer Odom 9-10 million for this year. Ariza will want to get paid big bucks too and if they had to choose, I think that they would choose to keep Ariza over Odom, with Ariza being younger and them counting on the development of Bynum and all.

Between Camby and Odom, I would choose Odom for a couple of reasons. First, I know that people criticize his aggressiveness and inconsistency, but he would only be the 3r or 4th option here in SA, maybe even lower, Odom plays great as that kind of guy (when not much is expected from him). Secondly, he would be able to guard the shooting 4′s in the league (Dirk, Lewis), while still being decent against post players. Lastly, we’ll be making the Lakers (the top WC contender) worse while making us better. Taking Camby from the Clippers will not help us in that respect or allow that level of defensive versatility.

Of course, this will leave us at a hole at our 2 spot. I propose that with some or all of our MLE we sign… are you ready for this? Anthony Parker. He’s decent both defensively and offensively, but not great. His stroke is obviously not at the level of Mason’s but, it isn’t that far off either. Also, his numbers (mainly 42.6 FG%, 39 3P FG% and 83.4 FT% ) don’t do him justice with respect to his career since Toronto sucked so much last year. His career averages are what I was intrigued about ( 45.8 FG%, 41.5 3p FG%, and 81.9 FT%). The guy has also been improving his jumper steadily throughout his career, and posted up wonderful numbers when Toronto was actually relevant. I recommend you check out his stats from 2006-2008 (before Toronto collapsed). He is also a better rebounder, passer, and plays better defense than Mason (at times being used as the stopper for the team). Lastly, think of him as a bench player since we all know Manu is our starting 2 guard. Anthony Parker could also provide some rest for when Jefferson heads to the bench and play the 3.

I hope the front office at least considers this, but you may be right, that would be a lot of big trades for one offseason. But I don’t think there is a downside to this. Is there?

Just in case, I meant to say that Anthony Parker was sometimes used as the defensive stopper (specially before the Matrix arrived there) for the Raptors team, not Mason for our team. Just in case anyone gets confused.
