Toros’ Alonzo Gee called up by the Wizards
One of the Austin Toros was called up this weekend, but it wasn’t who we thought. Nor was it the team we thought would be calling. Alonzo Gee signed a 10-day contract with the Washington Wizards on Sunday.

The Washington Wizards today signed Alonzo Gee of the Austin Toros. Gee is the 21st GATORADE Call-Up of the 2009-10 NBA season, and joins 81 current NBA players with NBA D-League experience.
Gee, 6-6, 220-pounds, has appeared in 35 games, all starts, for the Toros this season, averaging 21.0 points, 6.6 rebounds and 38.2 minutes. He scored in double figures in 34 games, including a career-high 34 points in a 127-94 victory over the Sioux Falls Skyforce on Jan. 6 in Austin, and recorded four double-doubles.
A member of the San Antonio Spurs at the 2009 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, Gee was selected sixth overall in the 2009 NBA D-League Draft by the Toros. Last month, Gee played in the 2010 NBA D-League All-Star game and participated in the 2010 NBA D-League Slam Dunk Competition in Dallas.
Gee is an athletic swing man who may actually see a little playing time with Washington. Gilbert Arenas’ suspension and Josh Howard’s torn ACL removed each of them from the picture this season, so Washington could use another player on the wing.
My opinion on Gee has changed since I began covering Toros games this season. My first impression was that he was a typical athletic scorer and nothing else. But as the season progressed I noticed a willingness to rebound and not only play defense, but learn the finer points of defending professional basketball players.
It’s unknown if he’ll play out his 10-day contract and return to Austin or eventually sign a contract for the rest of the season, but with Gee’s numbers it was just a matter of time before he got a look from a big club.
It doesn’t mean much for the Spurs, save for the fact that they have one less player to look at for the 13th spot on the roster. But my guess is it’s going to be either Dwayne Jones or, after Tony Parker’s injury last night, Curtis Jerrells who gets the call-up.

I hope he is available in the summer. Spurs can use a guy like him if they can’t pull anything out of the draft this summer. He offers the potential to fit a spot the Spurs sorely need. Athletic big swing man. And of course they need cheap players to fill out next seasons roster

@Jacob - no one was really bought out who is really that notable.
AI is the guy if you want to take a chance on a bigger name. Otherwise, Jerrells is the best bet for the short term.

too bad livingston got picked up by the wiz. i was hoping he would be our 13th. he definitely has a playmaker’s eye, and spent some time under scotty brooks in okc, so hopefully he’s got to have some semblence of defensive fight in him.
at this point, we’re sifting through scraps. we should’ve had an insurance policy 3rd pg in place already. hopefully jerrells can fill that role, but we shouldn’t have to count on him for more than 5-10 mins a game.

Curtis Jerrells will kick butt for the Spurs. He is a spark on offense that lifts his team to his intensity level. He is a blast to watch.
