What if: Gavin Maloof, Spurs Owner

by

I’m not big on historical counterfactuals but I can’t help but wonder what the last 13 years would have been like had Gavin Maloof owned the Spurs. Via the Express-News:

There was also a time when [Gavin] and his brother, Joe, almost bought the Spurs. The Maloof family had earlier owned the Rockets, and Gavin knew San Antonio well. He attended Trinity.

So, with the late Gen. Robert McDermott as his ally, he and his family bid for the Spurs in 1996. Holt edged him in a close vote by the ownership group.

“I think it was a fear of the unknown,” Maloof said Wednesday. “They didn’t know who we were.”

I’m not sure whether or not Maloof’s failed ownership bid was widely reported at the time but I certainly didn’t remember that. Then again, I was in junior high in 1996.

“Gavin Maloof” — sounds like something Professor Frink would say if you punched him in the stomach.
