“Winning or Whining”

From the Express-News via TrueHoop:

Ginobili’s absence gives the Spurs two choices: Winning or whining.

Gregg Popovich made it clear he expects little of the latter.

“That’s not how the team is built, character-wise,” he said, “so we look at it as a challenge and take it on.”

Over the last 24 hours, a lot of people have suggested the Spurs shut Duncan down and focus on next season. I am firmly against that. As best I can tell, so is Popovich. Oftentimes the Spurs sacrifice the importance of individual games on the altar of the season-as-a-whole but don’t confuse our focus on the horizon for a lack of competitiveness. If the Spurs are going down, we sure as hell are going down swinging.

  • All I have to say is they need to take shots like they’re intended for them. This hesitation I see the players have, has to stop in order for them to be successful. They need to force their style on their opponents. Dumping the ball into Timmy, waiting to see the defense gives us, then passing to another player who’s thinking “pass,” is getting old.

  • People say “shut Duncan down” because he’s not 100% and extended minutes worsen his injury. You really think a first round victory is worth maxing out Duncan’s minutes? I don’t.

  • In disappointing, depressing times like these, laughs are few and far between. Take a look at this and smile. Next year will be here soon enough.

  • ChillFAN,

I never said we should max out Duncan’s minutes, nor did I say we should be reckless with his body. It is possible for Popovich to be cautious regarding Duncan’s health while Tim and the boys still make an earnest attempt at some postseason success.

  • I still think shutting down Tim is a reasonable option, but I’m not going to whine about whether that happens or not. I just want what’s best for the team and for Timmy’s health, especially if we’re not going deep this year.

Before the season began, I honestly didn’t believe we could make it all the way, but mostly withheld that notion to get some real evidence of where we stood in the league. I had already been looking forward to possible changes for next season regardless of another ring or not, but with Manu’s injury, this topsy-turvy season has surely gotten the best of us.

Don’t misconstrue my opinions, though. I’m just trying to show that a fan can be a realist. The Duncan era still has plenty of potential left in it, as long as we compliment Timmy with the right pieces.

Now, I must say that that article was hilarious. I couldn’t help but enjoy picturing all of that in a post-game interview. Get well, Manu!

    Go Spurs Go!
